Start with the door jamb, not the sidewall
Your car's correct cold tire pressure is printed on the Tire and Loading Information Label on the driver's door edge or post — and in the owner's manual — not on the tire. NHTSA is blunt about the difference: the number on the sidewall is the maximum pressure the tire can hold, not the recommendation for your vehicle. Continental describes that sidewall figure as the tire's upper structural limit — not the pressure your car was engineered to run on. The placard number is the one your car's ride, grip, and wear were tuned around. Why "cold" matters
Every recommended pressure is a cold measurement — NHTSA defines cold as not driven on for at least three hours. The fix is not clever math; it is checking cold pressure more often in shoulder seasons, exactly when the good driving weather arrives.
Tread is about more than rain
Tread depth decides how your car behaves when the road surface stops cooperating — water, dust, gravel dragged across a corner. NHTSA's line is 2/32 of an inch: at that depth tires are not safe and should be replaced, and the penny test still settles it — Lincoln's head upside down in the groove, and if you can see the top of his head, the tires are done. Summer, all-season, touring: honest tradeoffs
Enthusiast cars often ride on max-performance summer tires, and it is worth understanding what that choice buys and what it costs. No tire type is universally superior — each is a different answer to the same question.
Summer tires
Built for high-performance cars: maximum dry and wet grip in warm conditions, with the responsive cornering and braking that makes a good road feel alive — Michelin, Bridgestone, and Continental all position them exactly there, and Continental notes a bonus few expect: lower rolling resistance and less road noise than knobbier designs. The cost is temperature range. Michelin warns against running summer tires where temperatures consistently approach freezing, and Pirelli puts the deterioration threshold near seven degrees Celsius — about 45 Fahrenheit — below which the stiff compound loses its elasticity and, in frosty conditions, can even crack rather than merely grip less.
All-season tires
The year-round compromise: balanced rather than maximized dry and wet performance, acceptable light-snow traction, and typically longer tread life. Bridgestone states the tradeoff plainly — some steering, braking, and cornering capability is sacrificed for that breadth. Worth knowing either way: Michelin notes even all-season rubber begins stiffening below about 45 degrees Fahrenheit, so cold-morning grip deserves respect on any tire.
Touring tires
Comfort and longevity first: tread patterns designed to minimize road noise and long-wearing compounds, per Bridgestone's own definition. For a grand tourer that measures drives in states rather than corners, that is not a downgrade — it is the correct tool.
Match the tire to how and where you actually drive — the climate you live in, the roads you seek out, and how the car spends its winters. The placard tells you the pressure; only you know the mission.
Replace in sets, and don't mix
Handling balance is engineered around four matched contact patches. Continental's general rule is not to mix tires — different tread patterns, constructions, or sizes — unless the tire or vehicle manufacturer explicitly approves it, and never to mix winter tires with summer or all-season. Bridgestone recommends replacing all four at once, in the same category, brand, size, and speed rating, so the car behaves the same at every wheel. On a sports or GT car set up around front-to-rear grip balance, this is not tire-shop upselling; it is chassis engineering.
Tires age even when they loaf
A weekend car can wear its tires out by calendar instead of odometer. Michelin's guidance is a thorough professional inspection at least annually once tires pass five years of service, and — as a precaution — replacement at ten years from the date of manufacture regardless of remaining tread, spare included. NHTSA notes replacement-age guidance is manufacturer-specific, with some vehicle and tire makers recommending six to ten years. If your tires look perfect and predate your phone, have them looked at.
